Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, born on 24 October 1632, is considered the first microbiologist,
in fact, he discovered the existence of bacteria, sperm and single-celled creatures by creating objectives and lenses for the microscope.
The lenses made in his home, above a market in the city of Delft in the Netherlands, allowed him to see living organisms that had not been seen for over a century.
Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's designer says that at the sight of the microscope one remains speechless for the vision of a surprising world.
Van Leeuwenhoek in a letter to the Royal Society of London wrote that he had seen small animals in the lake water which he had collected for his first experiment; today Gogle declares that "he had seen a whole world in a drop of water".
